Graves Into Gardens – Elevation Worship
The song, “Graves Into Gardens” is a testimony to the power and authority of our God; it contains many allusions to Biblical events and passages. It’s a song that very confidently declares how faithful God is to each of us. The title is an allusion to a 2 Kings 13:20-21 story detailing the death of the prophet Elisha in which his story didn’t end there. Two Israelites were near his gravesite about to bury another man when they saw a band of enemy raiders coming. They threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. As soon as the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. Elisha still had a resurrection miracle left in his bones, and God is still in the business of bringing dead things back to life.
A second reference is to a story in 1 Kings 20:13-28. Israel’s King Ahab had been fighting with the powerful Arameans. After the Arameans were defeated, advisors of Aram’s king advised him to attack in the plains next time. “Their God is God of the hills that’s why they beat us”. Then God replied to Ahab, “the Arameans think the Lord is god of the hills and not the valleys. I will deliver them into your hands.” If we’ll trust God even with the seemingly dead areas of our lives, if we’ll believe in the power of God, if we’ll declare resurrection power over everything we sow, nothing will be wasted.
The musical bridge in the song alludes to God’s power with six biblical instances: “turn morning to dancing” (Ps 30:11), “give beauty for ashes” (Is 61:3), “turn shame into glory” (Phil 3:17 – 4:1), “turn graves into gardens” (2 Kings 13:20-21), “bones into armies” (Ezek 37:1-14), and “turn seas into highways” (Ex 14:21)
